Trees
Your tree will come in one of two forms: balled and burlapped
(B&B); or containerized. Container or balled and burlapped
plants can be planted any time the ground is not frozen, except
during extremely hot weather. If possible, plant your tree as soon
as you get it home. Otherwise, it may dry out and become injured.
If you can't plant it immediately , place it in a shady and/or
sheltered location. Keep the soil moist until planted.
Before you Plant
Planting
To plant your tree, dig a hole at least twice as wide as the container
or root ball. Do not dig too deep - once the plant is placed in
the hole the top of the root ball should be slightly above level
with the surface of the ground. Planting your tree too deeply is
the easiest way to kill it.
When you purchase your tree, ask for a copy of our planting guide.
It contains valuable information about planting both balled & burlaped
& containerized trees. As always, our staff will be happy to answer
your questions regarding planting & caring for your tree.
We recommend using Bumper Crop & Master Start when planting your
tree. Use of these products is explained in detail in our planting
guide.
Always plant in well-drained soil. To test for soil drainage,
dig a hole for your new plant and fill it with water. If the water
doesn't drain in 24 hours, plant elsewhere.
Watering
Water your newly planted tree by using a slow, deep watering method.
Balled and burlapped and container plants' roots dry out faster
than the soil around them, so it is important to monitor their
soil moisture. Water slowly so as to attain deep water penetration
which encourages widespread root development. You will need to
water once a week ( or more during periods of extreme heat or no
rain). Use Root Master® B-1 according to the directions on
the bottle.
Staking
Unless necessary, trees should not be staked. If your tree or
shrub is top heavy or in an exposed area, you may stake the plant
so as to anchor the root ball so roots can develop rapidly into
the new soil. Drive 3 stakes into firm soil around the tree. Connect
the stakes to the trunk with flexible lines and straps designed
for this use. Allow for some movement in the plant for strong growth.
Remove the stakes and lines after one growing season so as not
to inhibit trunk development.
