Perennials

A perennial is a plant that comes up on it's own year after year.

Planting Perennial Plants

Place your plants around your planting area while still in their pots. Make sure you have taken into consideration the mature height of the plant as well as sun or shade requirements. Determine an approximate location for planting, then dig a hole twice the width and the pot.

Add a generous amount of Bumper Crop® to enrich the soil. We recommend using 1/2 Bumper Crop, 1/2 native soil. Blend together. Making sure your plants are nice and moist, remove them from their pots.

Or if the roots have grown out of compacted against the pot or container, 'feather' the roots out by using your fingers to gently pull the surface roots away from the root ball. This will encourage new roots to grow away from the root ball and out into the new soil. If the roots are extremely compacted, you may need to make a few shallow cuts through the roots on the side and bottom of the root ball.

Place your plant into the hole, water and root ball using Root Master® B-1 according to directions to help prevent transplant shock and to stimulate fine root growth. Add soil to ground level, mixing in Master Start® according to directions. Water the plant thoroughly to insure the soil fills in completely around the roots, eliminating air pockets.

Monitor your plants daily. Water slowly so as to attain deep water penetration which encourages widespread root development. Feed perennials weekly with Bud & Bloom® fertilizer. Perennials should be fed until the end of July. It is better to water deeply less often than shallowly more often.

Perennials will benefit from a monthly feeding from April through July. For flowering perennials Bud and Bloom should be used. For perennials that are predominantly grown for their foliage an all purpose fertilizer will be best. A member of our staff will be able to help you choose exactly the right fertilizer for your needs.

Perennials usually have a shorter bloom time than do annuals, although many of the newer varieties will bloom all summer. ALL PERENNIALS WILL BENEFIT from regular "dead-heading". This is a simple step that will keep your perennials blooming their longest.

Perennial gardening is fun and rewarding. Fell free to stop by and speak with our staff. They will be happy to help you with questions regarding layout, planting, fertilizing and caring for your new plants.
